Unexpected Routes: Refugee Writers in Mexico

Hosted by:
Holocaust Museum Houston
Join Holocaust Museum Houston for an evening lecture featuring Dr. Tabea Linhard, author of Unexpected Routes: Refugee Writers in Mexico. Unexpected Routes chronicles the refugee journeys of six writers whose lives were upended by fascism in the aftermath of the Spanish Civil War and during World War II. During her lecture, Dr. Linhard will explore the stories of German author Ruth Rewald, who was murdered during the Holocaust, and Czech writer and journalist Egon Erwin Kisch, who wrote about the Holocaust while in Mexico. While the writers she discusses in the book came from different backgrounds and wrote in different languages, they all made sense of their forced displacement in works that reveal their conflicted relationships with the people and places they encountered in transit as well as in Mexico. The literary output of these brilliant, prolific, but also flawed individuals reflects the most salient contradictions of what it meant to escape from fascist occupied Europe. This event is free and open to the public but advanced registration is required.

Exhibit Opening - Letters from Liberation

Hosted by:
Holocaust Museum Houston
In the Spira Central Gallery, a remarkable story unfolds—a story born from the liberation of Bergen-Belsen on April 15, 1945. British soldier Arthur Tyler encountered Naomi Kaplan, a Polish Jewish survivor of Auschwitz and Belsen, and wrote a letter that changed her life. That single message, sent to her family in Houston, set off a chain of events that reunited loved ones and allowed Naomi to begin anew. Through original letters, photographs, and personal artifacts, Naomi and Arthur: Letters from Liberation traces a journey from horror to hope—revealing how a single act of kindness can alter the course of history. We are honored to welcome Myfanwy Lloyd, historian at Oxford Art Consultants, whose research formed the foundation for this exhibition, to deliver the opening remarks.Special thanks to Benjamin Warren, Elyse Kalmans, and the Warren and Spector families for their commitment and passion for preserving the legacy of Naomi Warren and supporting this exhibition.

Author Talk with Christian Bancroft | “A Ghost Has No Fantasies”

Hosted by:
Holocaust Museum Houston
Join Holocaust Museum Houston for an intimate author talk in the Boniuk Library. Houston local Christian Bancroft is the author of A Ghost Has No Fantasies. “Through haunting poetry and prose, A Ghost Has No Fantasies illuminates the forgotten voices of LGBTQ+ individuals who suffered under Nazi persecution. Drawing from archival documents, survivor testimonies, and Gestapo files, Christian Bancroft weaves together the intimate stories of those imprisoned under Paragraph 175 and beyond — gay men, lesbians, and transgender individuals whose experiences have long remained in the shadows of Holocaust memory.” Copies or the book will be available for purchase at the event with a credit card.

“Passage to Sweden” Film Screening and Director Talkback

Hosted by:
Holocaust Museum Houston
Between 1940-1945 the sheer luck of where you were living made a world of difference to the Jews of Scandinavia. For unique political and geographic reasons, the Scandinavian Jews of Sweden, Norway, and Denmark had very different experiences. During the German occupation, Jews were rounded up and sent to concentration camps. Defying the occupying German forces, and protecting fellow citizens, spontaneous and dramatic rescue operations were conducted to save thousands of Jewish lives. First hand personal accounts also convey the extraordinary ways Swedish diplomats leveraged their political position to save Jews from within Hungary and Germany. Join us for a screening of the film followed by a talkback with Director Suzannah Warlick.
