Unexpected Routes: Refugee Writers in Mexico
Join Holocaust Museum Houston for an evening lecture featuring Dr. Tabea Linhard, author of Unexpected Routes: Refugee Writers in Mexico. Unexpected Routes chronicles the refugee journeys of six writers whose lives were upended by fascism in the aftermath of the Spanish Civil War and during World War II. During her lecture, Dr. Linhard will explore the stories of German author Ruth Rewald, who was murdered during the Holocaust, and Czech writer and journalist Egon Erwin Kisch, who wrote about the Holocaust while in Mexico. While the writers she discusses in the book came from different backgrounds and wrote in different languages, they all made sense of their forced displacement in works that reveal their conflicted relationships with the people and places they encountered in transit as well as in Mexico. The literary output of these brilliant, prolific, but also flawed individuals reflects the most salient contradictions of what it meant to escape from fascist occupied Europe. This event is free and open to the public but advanced registration is required.

NEXTGen Challah Bake
In celebration of Growing Up Jewish – Art & Storytelling, join Holocaust Museum Houston’s NEXTGen for a Challah Bake and an exclusive tour of the new exhibition.Known for its signature braided shape, challah is a rich, slightly sweet bread that is a staple of Jewish traditions, particularly for the Sabbath, holidays, and religious rituals. Taking place directly before Rosh Hashanah, guests will make round challahs representing the cycle of the year past and the cycle of the year ahead of us.Through contemporary paintings, Growing Up Jewish – Art & Storytelling explores the key people, experiences, and community that shaped artist Jacquelline Kott-Wolle.
