Unexpected Routes: Refugee Writers in Mexico
Join Holocaust Museum Houston for an evening lecture featuring Dr. Tabea Linhard, author of Unexpected Routes: Refugee Writers in Mexico. Unexpected Routes chronicles the refugee journeys of six writers whose lives were upended by fascism in the aftermath of the Spanish Civil War and during World War II. During her lecture, Dr. Linhard will explore the stories of German author Ruth Rewald, who was murdered during the Holocaust, and Czech writer and journalist Egon Erwin Kisch, who wrote about the Holocaust while in Mexico. While the writers she discusses in the book came from different backgrounds and wrote in different languages, they all made sense of their forced displacement in works that reveal their conflicted relationships with the people and places they encountered in transit as well as in Mexico. The literary output of these brilliant, prolific, but also flawed individuals reflects the most salient contradictions of what it meant to escape from fascist occupied Europe. This event is free and open to the public but advanced registration is required.

Kingdom of Night: The Liberation of Bergen-Belsen with Dr. Mark Celinscak
Join Holocaust Museum Houston for an evening with Dr. Mark Celinscak as part of the Warren Fellowship for Future Educators. Dr. Celinscak is the Louis and Frances Blumkin Professor of Holocaust and Genocide Studies and the Executive Director, Sam and Frances Fried Holocaust and Genocide Academy, Department of History at the University of Nebraska at Omaha. He will be discussing he book “Kingdom of Night.” “In April 1945, when the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp was surrendered and handed over to the British Army, Canadian forces arrived on scene to provide support, to bear witness, and to document the crimes. They were overwhelmed, understaffed, and left without adequate supplies, equipment, and medicine. Their encounters at the camp were haunting, transformative experiences that forever changed their lives. In Kingdom of Night, Mark Celinscak reveals the engagement of Canadian troops and other personnel at the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp. The book brings together a series of gripping, often deeply moving accounts that demonstrate the critical relief work carried out by Canadians who have been largely overlooked for more than seventy-five years. It outlines in both stark and moving detail what a cross-section of Canadians both said and did during the liberation efforts at one of the most notorious sites in Hitler’s camp system.” Copies of the book will be available for purchase with a credit card.
