Gerald S. Kaplan Endowed Lecture. Educating Traumatized Teenagers: The Extraordinary Story of a Swedish International School

Hosted by:
Holocaust Museum Houston
After World War II, Sweden absorbed and provided medical treatment for thousands of sick survivors. What to do about those who were teenagers, who had missed years of study on account of the war? In September 1945, the Swedish government issued an order for schooling to be offered to those under the age of 18. In this presentation, Dr. Bernice Lerner will describe the complex process of recruiting wary adolescents, the challenges of teaching homeless, orphaned, and “environmentally damaged” teenagers, and instructors’ goals and methods at the most experimental of sites—the “Internat” school her mother attended. Dr. Bernice Lerner is the author of All the Horrors of War: A Jewish Girl, a British Doctor, and the Liberation of Bergen-Belsen, and other writings on the Holocaust and on virtue ethics. She is the former dean of adult learning at Hebrew College, former lecturer on the Holocaust at Boston University, and a senior scholar at Boston University’s Center for Character and Social Responsibility. Gerald S. Kaplan Endowed Lecture.

Or Ami Gala 2026

Hosted by:
Congregation Or Ami
We are pleased to honor our congregant, Anne Perlmutter, who has devoted time and energy to making Or Ami thrive. Anne is a past-president, currently chairs our Ritual Practices Committee and our Capital Campaign Committee, and was the chair of our Pandemic Response Committee. She is the editor of our newsletter, the bi-monthly Kol Ami, a task she has performed for 23 years. She lends her experience in television production to keeping our audio system up to date and produced a four camera Zoom service for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur in 2020 so our membership was safe at home while having a High Holiday worship experience. She is always behind the scenes, yet her contributions are invaluable. We hope you’ll be a part of a much deserved celebration.

Enemies of the State: The Nazi Persecution of LGBTQ+ People

Hosted by:
Holocaust Museum Houston
Join us as historian Dr. Jake Newsome uses archival material and survivor testimonies to tell the stories of LGBTQ+ people in Nazi Germany. You’ll learn about the complex motivations that convinced Nazi leaders that combating homosexuality was vital to the success of the Third Reich. The result was the destruction of the vibrant LGBTQ+ communities that had emerged during Germany’s democratic years, and the targeting, torture, and murder of tens of thousands of LGBTQ+ Germans. And while the Holocaust ended in May 1945, LGBTQ+ survivors soon learned that the era of state sanctioned persecution was not over. The presentation is followed by Q&A and a book signing. A special thank you to Richard Lapin and Jim Nelson for their generous support in this event. Books will be available for purchase with a credit card
